More on Fischer.
"They do not want you free, and they will not make you strong, but only drag you down in the hole they're coming from..." - Janis Ian

Fischer's demise has been the source of lot of reflection on my point. Not that I'm an overly angst laden type of motherfucker or anything! A lot of memories ( most of them rather hazy at this point, actually) as to where I was and doing what back in '73. Another century, another planet! Bobby was the geek's geek, the misfit's misfit. He gave hope to those of us "lacking in the social skills" to use Janis Ian's phrase. The non jock's revenge. The weirdo's weirdo. over the year's I've accumulataed a number of books on Fischer. There's Fischer vs. Spassky The Chess Match Of The Century by Svetozar Gligoric a yellow crumbling paperback that I've had forever. Reshevesky's more sober and restrained The Fischer Spassky Games. likewise yellowing and falling apart. There's Pandolfini's Bobby Fischer's Outrageous Chess Moves. Bobby was nothing if not outrageous; a term that could be applied to his whole life. Robert E. Burger wrote a book called The Chess Of Bobby Fischer.
There were more; I don't know where the've gone. I can't acount for where so many years have gone. Fischer's death has left me in a strange mood. Whatever one thinks of his non chess life I still worship his games. An Icon, a part of my era has passed. The Twilight seems closer. We all lose our game with Death, but at least we can stomp on the board a while...
"One less variation to be played..." -Chess
I plan to spend most of the rest of this year reading and re-reading these and others that I'm sure are out there.
No doubt more ink will be spilled taking both Fischer and his games apart. I have about as much buisness analysing chess games as Ed Wood did making movies so I will desist in adding more.
Instead I turn to the truly ridiculus and post a few more comedies of error.

Le Roi C'est Mort!
Fischer's dead. He was a curmudgeon's curmudgeon. The ulitimate crazed otaku. The ultimate stero type of just how strange chess players can get. loner, weirdo, recluse, obsessed with strange theories, given to bizarre rants and anti-social behavior, he was like looking into a mirror. He was probably the poster boy for Aspergers snyndrome. What ever one makes of his sad behavior the geneius of his games continue to inspire.

Went down to J&B's the other night. Just to get out of the house. Remarkedly deserted. Typical of this one horse berg; they roll the streets up! Did find a few chess players. All way out of my league. Got involved in a bit of Bug House and lost my ass. No suprise there. The ring rust was formidable. been away too long. I should give up the game. yeah, like that's going to happen...

I find myself playing less and less over the board. Am turning more and more into a recluse.

Falling Into Fall
"An honest whore is less of an insult to humanity than a sanctimonious prig who ignores the truth and fosters error and illusion." - HP Lovecraft, letter to Maurice Moe 1/4/30

" There is a class of men- shadowy, unhappy, unreal-looking men who gather in coffee houses, and play with a desire that dieth not, and a fire that is not quenched. These gather in clubs and play tournaments...but there are others who have the vice who live in country places, in remote situations-curates, schoolmasters, tax collectors-who must nees find some artificial bent for their mental energy."- H.G. Wells, Concerning Chess

A Desire That Dieth Not. wasn't that the title of a rather bad vampire flick on the Bitch Channel?

Not a lot of time off these days. But I will endevor to keep my hand in. Somebody on the UCO news group was talking about some book coming out something about Animal Chess. I commented that people have accused me of playing like an animal for years. Most of my girlfriends have told me I belong in a zoo...

One guy over at Gameknot started out with a Bird's and then tried to switch to an Orangutan:

one of the shortest and funniest games I've ever played. Clyde Nakamura has a collection somewhere of the shortest howlers of all time. Let me see if I can dig down a few levels of the accumulated detritus on my desk and see If I can find it. When I get forked over that bad I usually go hide under a rock somewhere and vow never to play again. Doesn't work. Sooner or later I come out for more punishment. Nobody gives up chess; the pieces will call your name. Chess is a harsh mistress...

Does the Colle qualify as an animal name? I've been called a rather indelicate feline term for using it lately. I digress at this point and do my lecture on Greek and Latin Blue language but that, Kitties is another story...

The Canadians play something they call the Rat. I've been called that more than just a few times by various members of the Female persuasion as well as the Porcine reference. There is a hedgehog opening or variation, tabia? The Dunst opening is also known as The Wild Bull. The Dragon Sicilian is of course too obvious to mention...

Low ranking chess players are known as Fish in the states and Rabbits in the UK. Has anybody come up with an opening that could be called say, a Debauched Rabbit, Lepus Cariosus or something similar. For Wild Hares only... or maybe Knight Of The Lepus?

Gotta to go. The cats say it's feeding time...

Dog Days Continue..
"The days had gone by just as days go by..." - Hermann Hesse Steppenwolf.

The heat drags on. One advantage to working at night is I can usually avoid the worse of it, and the floors are cool.

I've been told by reputable sources that they've managed to "Solve" checkers. The venerable old man's game is a theoretical draw. Much discussion over at Chess Ninja as to what the future of Chess is. One of the lead Scientist said that Soving chess wasn't likely anytime in the near future without a major breakthrough. Yeah, right! That's what they said when 2001: A Space Odyssey came out back in 1968. First they said that computers would never play chess...then they said they would never beat humans...then they said they would never beat Kasparov! I am going out on a limb and going to predict that chess will be busted by the late 2020's.

On the other hand I don't think any of the crowd at the Doughnut Hole are going to give up the game anytime soon. I mean So Fucking what; we already know the Neitkuturny silicon beasts can outplay us. I learned the hard way that I can get blown off the board by the cheapest of El Cheapo Radio Shack monstrosities with disgusting regularity. As long as I can be reasonably sure that the bugger across the board isn't plugged into something I don't give the proverbial Rat's Ass! Maybe they'll start a full body strip and cavity search before the local weekend tornado tournament but I doubt it. And I'll give up my expresso and double chocolate biscotti when they pry them from my cold dead hand. MOLON LABE, Baby and all that jazz!

Woody Allen used to have this schtick about his war with technology. Every piece of new tech was supposed to be out to get him. I've had days like that. If I bought a Realdoll she'd probably leave me for the toaster. Run off with the coffee maker and I'd have to send her batteries for alimony. I still have a mountain of vinyl records; then they went to casset tapes and I bought a lot of those. I am just now getting into CD's. Next they'll probablly change to little ball bearings or something, just to bug me. It's all a conspiracy, Natasha, a deception within a deception cooked up by no good Moose and Squirrel!

The days go by... tomorrow or the next day I'll sign up for a weekend Swiss and find myself paired against an Android. I guess I won't mind provided it's female. As the philosopher Bugs Bunny said somewhere, "OK, so it's mechanical".

Musings from the back side of the moon; seen the Void...how did Chandler decribe his wife: "music heard at the edge of sound." Very polytonal. takes me back to the late sixties and my atonal free jazz period. Found the web site. http://www.andrewhilljazz.com/home.html

Beautiful piece this:
J. S. Bach: Ach Gott und Herr, BWV 714 (B minor) "This version from the recently discovered Neumeister Chorales starts with a somber setting of the chorale and is then followed by the familiar but intriguing double canon at the octave, with that haunting simplicity Bach can impart to four related lines of music." OK I said I wouldn't buy anymore chess books, [ yeah, right!] but I decieded to order SOS #6 and test drive some of the lines. There's a section on the 3...Qd6 Skandi which I keep running into so I couldn't resist. I just might work my way through the whole SOS series just for the hell of it. [ Keep threating to write a chess book: Chess For The Hell Of It! or maybe Chess For The Halibut!]

"Chess is as elaborate a waste of human intelligence as you can find outside an advertising agency." -Raymond Chandler

Digging thru some old notebooks; desparate to try to find something to post. Back in '93 Tania the Brighton Beach Bombshell was in town and I played a lot of experimental games against her old and musty RadioShack computer;losing mostly. She insisted on holding the damn thing between her legs and I had to go down on her between moves...

Most of the time I play the Dutch defense with mixed results but I also played 1...d5 and often found myself playing against a veresov. since I play the veresov myself I keep trying to come up with junk to throw at it.

The notes are hard to read; in places the crayola has smeared. The Triage Nurse wouldn't give me anything sharp...

Black gives up the ghost

This game shows how pathetic I am at tactics (or much else!) back in '93. I doubt that my game has inproved any since. The Silicon MaterFulqefer destroyed me. Notes indicate that. 10...Nxe5?? gasp, oh the horror, is the Goat$%^# of the century. I missed maybe 10...Bxf3 11.Qxf3, Ne5 forking up the Q et B. Earlier 5. e4 might be better as 5...dxe3 allows 6.QxQ! instead of the funky 4.Nb5? 4. Ne4, Bf5 5.Ng3, Bg6 6.Nf3 is a reversed Nimzovitch's other (Nimzo's Whore, Nimzo's Bitch) probably better for white. I don't see much of future for 2... e5 but will continue to play it just because it bugs veresov addicts.

Been doing a lot of nightshifts which leave me too wiped out to do much with my off time.(not that I have any off time, mind you) Put will keep posting as much as possible.

Continuing list of B movies from the classic Up All Night days:
The Last Dinosaur (1977) Shirley Bassey sings the theme song. Always wanted to compose a Fantasy and Fugue based on it. Check out http://www.trebuchet.com/ they sell crossbows too!

Saw a dinosaur themed chess set somewhere. Expensive bugger.
